About the position

The Extension Program Coordinator for 4-H Youth Development at the University of Illinois Extension plays a vital role in promoting, expanding, and implementing educational programs aimed at youth in schools and communities. This position is designed to enhance the quality of life for individuals and communities by providing educational programming that addresses societal concerns and empowers the next generation of leaders. The coordinator will work closely with the 4-H Youth Development Educator or Specialist to plan educational activities, identify critical needs, and evaluate program effectiveness. This role also involves providing leadership and support to local 4-H clubs, volunteers, and families, ensuring that programs are accessible to under-served youth audiences. In addition to program coordination, the Extension Program Coordinator will be responsible for recruiting, training, and maintaining relationships with adult volunteers. This includes orienting volunteers to the 4-H philosophy, coordinating training sessions, and ensuring that all program activities comply with safety and welfare standards. The coordinator will also develop and implement marketing strategies to attract participants and volunteers, utilizing various promotional methods such as social media and community networking. The position requires participation in professional development opportunities and regular communication with Extension staff and the Extension Council. The coordinator must comply with all University policies and procedures, including those related to affirmative action and equal opportunity. The role may involve working evenings and weekends, and the coordinator must be prepared to travel to various locations within the community to conduct program activities. This position is essential for fostering community engagement and enhancing the educational experiences of youth through the 4-H program.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the planning of educational activities for the 4-H program in collaboration with the 4-H Youth Development Educator or Specialist.
  • Identify critical priority needs and issues to be addressed through Extension 4-H youth programs, particularly for under-served youth audiences.
  • Conduct evaluations of program activities and make recommendations for program continuation or changes.
  • Serve as the primary contact for volunteers, 4-H members, and their families to support local 4-H Clubs and activities.
  • Provide leadership for the local Expansion and Review Committee, if active.
  • Maintain administrative records, including 4-HZSuites and 4-H Fair Entry, in collaboration with Unit staff and Extension volunteers.
  • Disseminate educational information provided by Extension professionals and maintain required records and data.
  • Provide monthly reports to the County Extension Director.
  • Recruit, screen, and select adult 4-H volunteers with assistance from the Recruitment & Engagement EPC.
  • Orient volunteers to the 4-H program philosophy, risk management, policies, and procedures.
  • Coordinate volunteer training related to program offerings and continuing education opportunities.
  • Maintain regular contact with volunteers through meetings and correspondence.
  • Formulate and implement standard operating procedures for program activities to ensure safety and welfare of all participants.
  • Develop and implement a marketing plan to recruit adult volunteers and youth participants for 4-H opportunities.
  • Utilize various promotion methods, including social media and printed materials, to reach potential participants.
  • Network and collaborate with community organizations to assess needs and develop programs accordingly.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities and attend scheduled staff meetings to update Extension staff and Council on activities.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or GED.
  • Four years of responsible volunteer or professional work experience in coordinating educational and/or community programs or activities.
  • Demonstrated experience or coursework in volunteer management, working with youth audiences, and/or developing youth programming.
  • Skills in communicating and collaborating with diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals and groups.
  • Proficiency in operating computer systems and attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and multi-task effectively.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in marketing and outreach for educational programs.
  • Knowledge of community resources and organizations related to youth development.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms for program promotion.
