About the position

The External Communications Intern at American Water Works Company Inc. will support external affairs, government affairs, and business development staff. This role involves organizing community relations events, outreach to key stakeholders, and assisting with data entry and analysis to support growth opportunities and corporate communications. The intern will gain firsthand experience in how water utilities support communities and ensure sustainability while collaborating with professionals in various activities.

Responsibilities

• Support external affairs, government affairs, and business development staff.
• Organize, prepare, and execute community relations events and outreach to key external stakeholders.
• Assist with data entry, collection, and analysis in support of growth opportunities and policy objectives.
• Research and prepare information and reports for internal and external meetings, events, and presentations.
• Collaborate with professionals to assist with external affairs and community relations activities.

Requirements

• Enrollment in a Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Public Administration, Business Administration, Political Science undergraduate degree program, or a relevant program from an accredited school.
• Minimum of 2 years of completed coursework.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Demonstrated organizational and administrative abilities.
• Ability to work independently and manage time across multiple projects and deadlines.
• Seek input and coordinate with staff.
• Conduct thorough analyses and evaluations, resulting in timely decisions and recommendations.
• Good working knowledge of computer programs, databases, and software.
