About the position

The Extreme Environments Renewable Energy Researcher at NREL's Alaska Campus will focus on energy optimization model development and analyses to support the Applied Research for Communities in Extreme Environments (ARCEE) Center. This role involves working with various stakeholders to develop energy strategies and implement distributed energy resources, energy efficiency, and sustainable transportation solutions. The researcher will utilize NREL's REopt modeling platform and conduct engineering analyses to evaluate the feasibility of renewable energy technologies in extreme environments.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and perform analysis with NREL's REopt modeling platform for energy systems integration and optimization.
  • Conduct engineering analysis using mixed integer linear programming and other energy system analysis tools (i.e., SAM, HOMER).
  • Evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of distributed renewable energy, energy efficiency, storage, flexible loads, and conventional generation in buildings, campuses, or microgrids.
  • Work with clients to design analyses to inform distributed energy deployment pathways.
  • Document and present engineering results, including publishing results in technical reports, conference papers, or journal articles.
  • Analyze measurement and monitoring data and perform community technical assessments to identify on-site energy technology opportunities.
  • Provide support for technical assistance, engagements, and related activities.
  • Collaborate within an interdisciplinary research team and take on leadership roles in projects.

Requirements

  • For Researcher III: Relevant PhD or Master's Degree with 3+ years of experience or Bachelor's Degree with 5+ years of experience.
  • For Researcher II: Relevant Master's Degree or Bachelor's Degree with 2+ years of experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working in extreme environments, such as in rural Alaska or similar regions.
  • Strong leadership, communication, problem solving, and project management skills.
  • Proficiency in data collection, analysis, and visualization.

Nice-to-haves

  • Develop and edit educational materials for various stakeholders.
  • Manage projects, including creating schedules and monitoring progress.
  • Contribute to strategic planning and develop protocols for energy technology assessments.
  • Establish connections with relevant entities and engage with sponsors for research funding.
