The Extreme Heat Research Scientist position is a critical role within the Environmental Health Hazard Assessment Office, specifically under the Extreme Heat Ranking System Development Section (EHRSDS). This section is tasked with implementing Assembly Bill 2238, which focuses on developing and managing an extreme heat ranking system for California. The role requires a deep understanding of scientific and health data to identify risk factors associated with heat impacts across the state. The successful candidate will engage with public, state, and federal agencies to ensure the effectiveness of the tool being developed. Collaboration with the Information Technology Branch is essential to create a system that is not only functional but also transparent and accessible to the public. A key aspect of this position is the commitment to equity, ensuring that the needs of communities most affected by extreme heat events are considered in the system's development. As a Research Scientist IV (Epidemiology/Biostatistics), the individual will serve as a senior team member, providing leadership and direction in the ongoing development and maintenance of the extreme heat ranking system. This includes conducting research to validate the scientific and public health assumptions that underpin the ranking system. The Research Scientist will lead the analysis of meteorological and epidemiological datasets related to extreme heat, represent the EHRSDS in public workshops and discussions, and create public-facing materials that clearly communicate the findings and functionalities of the extreme heat ranking system. This role is pivotal in ensuring that the system is not only scientifically sound but also user-friendly for stakeholders and the general public.
