About the position

The Operator, Extruder II is a high-skill role at Southwire Company, LLC, responsible for setting up and operating extrusion lines and related equipment, including nylon extruders, coilers, pay-offs, and take-ups, whether manual or automatic. This position may involve operating single or two-person lines depending on the complexity of the line or product. Commonly operated machines under this job title include Jacket/Romex and Tandem Lines (BWP), Circuit Size THHN Extruder, and Jacket/Romex Lines (North Campus). The role requires a strong commitment to safety, quality, and effective communication with supervisors and peers. Operators must be able to lift heavy loads and stand for extended periods while maintaining a high level of attention to detail. They are responsible for ensuring the proper setup of extrusion lines, maintaining correct wire size, insulation thickness, and concentricity, and applying the correct print of acceptable quality on cables. Operators will also be required to follow safety protocols, including wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) and adhering to environmental rules and procedures. The job demands physical activity, including lifting, pushing, and standing, and operators must be prepared to work in varying environmental conditions, including heat and cold. In addition to the primary responsibilities, operators will engage in cross-training on equipment within their workgroup and may be required to fill in for absent colleagues. Quality assurance is a critical aspect of the role, as operators must utilize the company's ISO Quality System documentation to guide daily quality activities and report any quality issues immediately. Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate extrusion lines and related equipment, including nylon extruders, coilers, pay-offs, and take-ups.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with the supervisor and peers through verbal instruction and reports.
  • Lift up to 45 lbs and manage scrap materials appropriately.
  • Ensure proper setup of extrusion line with correct tip, die, and wire size.
  • Maintain correct wire size, insulation thickness, and concentricity during production.
  • Apply correct print of acceptable quality on cable products.
  • Observe Southwire safety rules and maintain good housekeeping practices.
  • Use proper compound and color concentrate in production processes.
  • Minimize wire and compound loss during start-up and change-overs.
  • Conduct daily inventory of WIP tags and report quality issues immediately.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English; bilingual in Spanish is a plus.
  • Ability to stand and lift heavy loads for long periods of time.
  • Ability to read and comprehend production orders and instrumentation on complex equipment.
  • Basic math skills (adding, subtracting, etc.).

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in operating extrusion machinery or similar equipment.
  • Knowledge of ISO Quality System documentation and quality assurance processes.
