The position is responsible for the advanced assembly of costumes and leading teams through complex alterations and new construction of costume pieces for various venues and new projects. The individual will lead a small team of fabrication specialists in constructing costumes from material goods to full completion, ensuring that all types of garments meet the fabrication and consistency standards set by Universal Orlando (UO). Professionalism and confidentiality must be maintained during the fitting process, which is a critical aspect of the role. In addition to leading the team, the position requires the ability to perform and oversee complex repairs and alterations on a wide range of fabrics, including silks, chiffons, woven and non-woven fabrics, stretch materials like lycra and spandex, and specialty materials. This will involve using both standard and computerized industrial sewing, pressing, and finishing equipment. The candidate should be adept at translating design renderings and technical drawings, assisting in developing patterns through draping, flat patterning, and modifying pre-made patterns. An intermediate understanding of hard copy patterns and a basic understanding of CAD patterns is also necessary. The role includes leading the layout and cutting of projects, with a strong emphasis on knowledge of grain, knap, and fabric-saving techniques. An intermediate understanding of textiles and fibers is essential to determine best practices for pressing, laundering, and working with various materials. The candidate should also have extended experience in craftsmanship, which includes skills in millinery, stoning, basic foams, bead work, and detailed hand stitching. Furthermore, the individual must understand and actively participate in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by adhering to established UO policies and procedures. Other duties may be assigned as needed.
