About the position

The CH2 Facilities and Data Center Technician IV is a critical role that requires an expert level of knowledge in the operational integrity and regulatory compliance of facilities and data center systems. This position is specifically for the overnight shift, requiring the technician to work from 10:00 PM to 6:30 AM CST. The technician will be responsible for various systems including electrical, mechanical, fire life safety, and communications infrastructure. In terms of mechanical responsibilities, the technician will manage chilled water systems, HVAC systems such as rooftop units, CRAC/CRAH units, and humidification systems. Electrical responsibilities include overseeing electrical and critical power distribution from the Utility/Generator main switchgear through the UPS systems to the customer load. The technician will also handle fire life safety systems, including wet sprinkler systems and pre-action sprinkler systems, along with their associated detection devices. The role requires the technician to work closely with the Data Center Manager to maximize customer uptime in a cost-effective manner. This includes ensuring that data center problems are identified and repaired quickly, managing contractors to deliver quality services, and meeting internal customer demands. The technician will also be responsible for developing creative approaches to minimize operational costs, improve efficiency, and implement new strategies. This is an in-person role due to the operational needs of the facility, emphasizing the importance of hands-on expertise in maintaining the data center's operational efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the subject matter expert for electrical, mechanical, controls, and fire life safety systems in the facilities and data center.
  • Complete CoreSite's Data Center Operations Qualification Program within the first nine months of employment.
  • Operate, monitor, maintain, and respond to abnormal conditions in facilities systems, including Electrical, Mechanical, Communications, and Building Monitoring and Control.
  • Track and trend operational characteristics to ensure efficiency.
  • Mentor junior staff and provide guidance to the Data Center Manager on maintenance requirements.
  • Ensure the data center operates at maximum efficiency by analyzing existing conditions and recommending new technologies.
  • Manage systems to avoid unplanned outages that impact customers.
  • Oversee the data floor and back of house mechanical loading capacity to ensure cooling systems operate efficiently.
  • Provide expertise in fire and electrical codes and assist in technical writing for maintenance procedures.
  • Assist the Data Center Manager with database management of maintenance discrepancies and resolve site issues based on priorities.
  • Manage trouble tickets and work order completion processes.
  • Oversee infrastructure projects including cage build-outs and overhead installations.
  • Utilize a CMMS system for operations and maintenance management.
  • Assist in asset and consumable inventory management and ensure proper labeling of equipment.
  • Ensure timely completion of processes related to Service Level Agreements (SLA) and data uploads to OSS.
  • Provide physical security within the CoreSite premises and deliver exceptional customer service.
  • Monitor the building fire alarm system and conduct regular facility and security tours.

Requirements

  • Expert understanding of electrical and mechanical systems in a facility and data center environment, including electrical distribution, transformers, PLCs, generators, switchgear, UPS systems, and chilled water systems.
  • Expert knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 72, NFPA 25, and compliance issues related to fire life safety and building codes.
  • Expert knowledge of fiber optics and cabling infrastructure best practices.
  • Expert knowledge in industrial safety best practices, including lockout/tag out and OSHA regulations.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting large commercial and industrial systems.
  • Proven leadership skills and experience in managing teams and projects.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, including proficiency in Microsoft Suite.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a data center, hospital, or power plant environment is preferred.
  • Familiarity with CMMS systems and database management.
