About the position

The City of Alexandria is seeking a Facilities Maintenance Specialist to join the Department of Community and Human Services. This position involves performing skilled work in the maintenance, repair, and alteration of fixtures, equipment, and buildings. The ideal candidate will be responsible for a variety of building trades tasks, which may include interpreting verbal or written work orders, sketches, or blueprints. The Facilities Maintenance Specialist will work under general supervision but is expected to perform most tasks independently, showcasing a high level of skill and initiative. In this role, the specialist will monitor, repair, and replace controls for both major and minor HVAC equipment, including VFD drives and thermostats. Responsibilities also include replacing consumable parts on HVAC systems, repairing plumbing fixtures, troubleshooting electrical components, and maintaining building safety systems. The specialist will respond to after-hours emergency repair calls and perform administrative duties such as managing emails and inputting information into the MP2 system. Additionally, the role involves providing maintenance and logistical support for city-sponsored events and supervising contractors in various trades. The ideal candidate should possess thorough knowledge of building maintenance methods, practices, tools, and materials, as well as the ability to interpret blueprints and sketches. The position requires physical ability to perform manual tasks and a commitment to safety and compliance with state and local codes. The Facilities Maintenance Specialist will play a crucial role in ensuring the functionality and safety of city facilities, contributing to the overall well-being of the Alexandria community.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor, repair and replace controls for major/minor HVAC equipment including VFD drives and thermostats.
  • Replace consumable parts on HVAC equipment such as belts, filters, pumps, bearings, and couplings.
  • Repair and replace plumbing parts and fixtures including supply lines, faucets, and o-rings.
  • Clear out large and small drain lines.
  • Repair, replace and troubleshoot electrical components and fixtures including ballasts, contactors, relays, and switches.
  • Repair and troubleshoot major HVAC equipment including rooftop units, cooling towers, chillers, and boiler systems.
  • Test, monitor and make minor repairs to building safety systems.
  • Respond to after-hours emergency repair calls.
  • Perform administrative duties including answering emails and communicating with vendors.
  • Provide maintenance and logistical support for City-sponsored events.
  • Repair and install various plumbing fixtures and appliances such as toilets, sinks, and water heaters.
  • Repair and install light switches and indoor/outdoor lighting.
  • Perform carpentry tasks including drywall repair, painting, and flooring installation.
  • Supervise contractors in Pest Control, Electrical, Plumbing, and General Contracting.

Requirements

  • Considerable experience on a skilled level in several building maintenance trades.
  • Completion of high school or vocational school-level courses.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of residence.

Nice-to-haves

  • Expertise in HVAC systems, electric and/or plumbing systems, and carpentry.
