About the position

The Facilities Maintenance Tech I position is a vital role within the City of Bay City, responsible for performing a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks related to the maintenance, repair, carpentry, and construction of city-owned buildings and facilities. Under the supervision of the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor, the technician will assist in routine maintenance duties, which include painting, plumbing, moving and assembling office furniture, and performing carpentry work. The role also involves participating in all activities related to the exterior grounds clean-up and mowing of city properties and facilities. The technician will respond to service calls and complete work order requests, ensuring that all tasks are performed efficiently and effectively. In addition to general maintenance duties, the technician will be expected to maintain tools and equipment, ensuring they are in safe operating condition. Participation in meetings, workshops, training, and seminars is also required to gather and convey information necessary for job functions. The technician will need to secure necessary supplies and utilize vehicles and specialized equipment as needed for various projects, maintenance, repairs, and replacements. Regular attendance is essential, as is the ability to travel to remote locations as necessary. The position encompasses various responsibilities, including assisting carpenters with manual labor, operating complex machinery and tools, and performing grounds maintenance. The technician will also be involved in emergency response situations, requiring participation as first responders during events such as tropical storms and hazardous material spills. Overall, this position is crucial for maintaining the functionality and safety of city facilities and properties, contributing to the overall well-being of the community.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled work in maintenance, repair, carpentry, and construction of City-owned buildings and facilities.
  • Assist Carpenter with routine building and facilities maintenance duties.
  • Perform general maintenance duties including painting, plumbing, moving and assembling office furniture, and carpentry work.
  • Participate in all activities relating to exterior grounds clean-up and mowing of city property and facilities.
  • Respond to service calls and complete work order requests.
  • Maintain vehicle, tools, and equipment to ensure availability in safe operating condition.
  • Participate in meetings, workshops, training, and seminars as assigned.
  • Secure necessary supplies and utilize vehicles and specialized equipment as needed on projects, maintenance, repairs, and replacements.
  • Assist in building, repairing, and installing various structures and furniture.
  • Operate a variety of complex equipment, machinery, and tools including light trucks, backhoes, and power tools.
  • Inform personnel regarding procedures and/or status of work orders to provide necessary information for decision-making.
  • Participate in on-call rotation schedule as required to perform the duties of the position.

  • Ability to take a proactive approach to customer service issues.
  • Ability to work in a safe manner, following City safety practices and procedures.
  • Must pass a medical physical examination and drug test.
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Valid Class C Texas State Driver's License and safe driving record.

Nice-to-haves

  • Valid Texas Class B CDL or obtain within two (2) years of employment.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • First-Aid/CPR Certified.
  • Certified Flagger or previous experience as a flagger.
