About the position

The Facilities Stationary Engineer II position at Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) involves performing a variety of highly skilled industrial and commercial trades work. This includes HVAC and Refrigeration (HVACandR), Building Automation, Fire Systems, Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing, Fabrication, Locksmith, Painting, and Civil maintenance work. The role is essential for the operation, repair, and maintenance of SMUD facilities, equipment, and properties. Under general to limited supervision, the engineer will be responsible for ensuring that all systems are functioning optimally and in compliance with the latest technology and energy efficiency standards, including LEED Platinum and Net Zero requirements. This journey-level position requires independent problem-solving and innovative thinking to enhance systems performance and deliver outstanding customer satisfaction. The engineer will also provide lead direction and work review to assigned staff on specific projects, ensuring that all tasks are completed efficiently and effectively. The role demands expertise in three or more skilled trades, with experience in HVACandR, Building Automation, Fire Systems, Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing, and Locksmith duties. The engineer will be involved in preventive and periodic maintenance, installation, operation, repairs, and troubleshooting of various systems and equipment within SMUD's facilities. The Facilities Stationary Engineer II will work in diverse environments, including office buildings, shops, garages, data centers, and substations. The position requires a strong understanding of building systems and technology, as well as the ability to direct the work of contractors when necessary. The engineer will also be responsible for operating SMUD vehicles, including trucks and forklifts, to complete maintenance tasks across different locations.

Responsibilities

  • Provides lead direction on specific projects as assigned; organizes and directs work.
  • Performs preventive and periodic maintenance, installation, operation, repairs, overhaul, rebuilding, and troubleshooting of HVAC andR, Building Automation, Fire Systems and Suppression Systems, Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing, Fabrication, Locksmith, Painting, and Civil maintenance work to SMUD buildings, equipment, and properties.
  • Installs, maintains, repairs, overhauls, rebuilds, and troubleshoots HVACandR and other equipment in SMUD buildings or plants.
  • Installs, Programs, Operates, Troubleshoots, Repairs, Calibrates and maintains centralized building automation control systems.
  • Oversees and performs scheduled maintenance and testing, troubleshooting and repair of building fire monitoring and suppression systems.
  • Performs electrical installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair on individual HVAC/Mechanical equipment up to and including 3 phase 480 VAC.
  • Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, repairs and modifies indoor and outdoor plumbing systems, sewage lift stations, storm water pumps, well pumps, water heaters, domestic water booster pumps, grey water systems, and backflow prevention systems.
  • Installs, troubleshoots repairs and modifies all doors and locks, including building cores and access control hardware.
  • Performs light building modifications and fabrication involving metal and sheet metal fabrication/welding.

Requirements

  • Completion of an approved apprenticeship program in the HVAC or building maintenance trades, or completion of an accredited trade program such as the Sacramento City College Mechanical / Electrical Technology program.
  • A minimum of four years journey level work in the installation, operation, repair, maintenance, and troubleshooting of commercial and industrial buildings and equipment.
  • Universal Refrigerant Transition and Recovery certification.
  • Ability to obtain a fire pump testing certification within 6 months.
  • Valid California Drivers License and a satisfactory driving record.

Nice-to-haves

  • Training and four years of experience in three or more of the essential functions/duties.
  • Experience working in a facilities department in support of a large commercial or industrial complex.
  • Experience working with Siemens Insight or Desigo.
