About the position

The Facility Maintenance Technician plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of school facilities by performing a variety of skilled technical duties related to repair, maintenance, replacement, and troubleshooting. This position is essential for maintaining a safe and functional environment for students and staff. The technician will be responsible for responding to work orders from school principals or the maintenance office, ensuring that all tasks are completed efficiently and effectively. Key responsibilities include routine maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs and ballasts, changing filters on HVAC systems, and checking fire extinguishers monthly. The technician will also be involved in maintaining bathroom fixtures and plumbing, performing light carpentry, and conducting minor repairs to furniture and school equipment. Additionally, the technician will be responsible for maintaining roofs, gutters, and drains, as well as performing small repairs to drywall and replacing floor tiles as needed. The role requires a proactive approach to maintenance, including responding to after-hours emergencies and assisting with summer maintenance projects. The technician must be able to work in various environments, both indoors and outdoors, and be prepared to handle physical demands associated with the job, such as lifting, climbing, and working in confined spaces. This position is vital for the upkeep of school facilities, ensuring that they remain safe and conducive to learning.

Responsibilities

  • Provides maintenance support to the assigned schools by work orders from the principal or maintenance office
  • Replaces light bulbs and ballasts
  • Changes filters on HVAC systems on routine schedule
  • Checks fire extinguishers on a monthly basis
  • Checks and cleans off roofs and gutters
  • Installs bulletin boards, dry erase boards, etc.
  • Maintains bathroom fixtures and plumbing
  • Performs light carpentry, lock, electrical and plumbing repairs
  • Repairs desks, chairs and other furniture and equipment as necessary
  • Replaces glass in windows and doors as needed
  • Performs minor repairs to school equipment
  • Performs repairs to roofs, gutters and drains
  • Performs small repairs to drywall
  • Replaces floor tile(s)
  • Checks and replaces belts on equipment as needed
  • Oils and greases pumps and motors as needed
  • Responds to after hour emergencies as requested
  • Provides assistance to paint crew and carpentry crew during summer months
  • Performs related tasks as needed in all maintenance areas
  • Under sink grease trap maintenance
  • Assists with operation of sewer drain equipment
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor

Requirements

  • Graduation from High School or equivalent
  • Carpentry experience preferred
  • Experience in one or more of the trades common to building maintenance
  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License
