About the position

The Facility Services Apprentice - Electrical position at Clayton County Public Schools is designed for individuals looking to gain hands-on experience in the electrical field. This apprenticeship involves assisting skilled technicians in performing repairs, installations, and preventative maintenance on various electrical equipment throughout the district. The apprentice will work under the guidance of the Electrical Supervisor and will be responsible for ensuring that all electrical systems, including lights, receptacles, switches, breakers, and disconnects, are functioning properly and safely. The role requires a commitment to safety and adherence to established procedures while performing tasks in a variety of environments, including school grounds and facilities. In this position, the apprentice will be expected to operate various hand tools and test equipment, including voltage meters and small drills. The role also involves maintaining an inventory of parts and tools on the assigned vehicle, ensuring that all necessary equipment is available for repairs and installations. The apprentice will assist with both routine and emergency assignments, demonstrating flexibility and a willingness to respond to operational needs as they arise. This position is critical in supporting the overall functionality of the district's facilities and ensuring a safe learning environment for students and staff. The work environment is variable, with the apprentice being subjected to different weather conditions and temperatures. The position may require being on call after normal working hours, including weekends and holidays, to address emergency situations. Physical demands include walking, standing, kneeling, and driving for extended periods, as well as the ability to lift heavy objects and climb ladders. A pre-employment physical examination is required, and applicants will be reimbursed for the cost upon successful hiring.

Responsibilities

  • Assists technicians/master technicians in performing all electrical repairs and/or installations.
  • Installs electrical equipment, systems, and associated wiring using appropriate safety procedures.
  • Performs preventative maintenance as required on various equipment and fixtures inside and outside of all buildings in the district.
  • Responsible for the availability of all parts, tools, and equipment on the assigned vehicle.
  • Operates hand tools, wire cutters, test equipment, small drills, and voltage meters, and other tools relevant to repairs and installations.
  • Assists with District and emergency and/or general assignments as operationally necessary.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned and required to perform the above services.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required; trade specific certificate preferred.
  • Minimum of one (1) year electrical experience preferred.
  • Valid Georgia driver's license required; CDL preferred.
  • Familiarity with computer applications preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with voltmeters and other electrical testing equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical systems and safety procedures.
