About the position

The Failure Analysis/Principal Failure Analysis Engineer at Northrop Grumman will work at the Advanced Technology Lab in Linthicum, Maryland, focusing on semiconductor products for both internal and commercial customers. This role involves performing failure analysis on various semiconductor devices, utilizing advanced techniques and equipment to troubleshoot and characterize materials. The engineer will contribute to the development of cutting-edge technology in microelectronics, supporting critical systems for ground-based and space applications.

Responsibilities

• Performing cross-sectioning analysis using encapsulated and nonencapsulated techniques for SEM sample preparation and operating the argon milling tool for sample polish.
• Operating FIB-SEMs for a variety of semiconductor devices for failure analysis.
• Troubleshooting failure analysis equipment when issues arise.
• Performing EDS elemental analysis to characterize semiconductor materials.
• Preparing and submitting test results to customers.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in a related technical discipline with 2 years of relevant experience or 0 years with a Masters; will consider 4 years of applied experience in lieu of degree requirement.
• Knowledge of Dual Beam/Plasma FIB-SEMs, regular SEMs, tabletop SEMs, and Argon Mills.
• Knowledge of superconducting microelectronics.
• Experience working in a laboratory environment.
• Must be a US Citizen.
• Must be able to obtain/maintain a Secret clearance.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience working with GaAs, GaN, and Si semiconductors.
• Experience in a microelectronic wafer fabrication and testing environment.
• Hands-on experience working with superconducting microelectronics.
• Experience working with microscopes and scanning electron microscopes.
• Experience in MATLAB and Python.
