About the position

The Family Services Specialist II position within the Adult Services/Adult Protective Services (APS) program is a vital role that focuses on providing professional services to vulnerable adults. This position is responsible for conducting Long-Term Services and Supports screenings and managing cases related to guardianship and companion services. The specialist will investigate allegations of adult abuse, neglect, and exploitation, ensuring that all actions comply with relevant laws, policies, and regulations. The role requires a comprehensive understanding of social work principles and practices, as well as the ability to assess and address the needs of clients effectively. In addition to case investigations, the Family Services Specialist II will monitor, coordinate, and administer specific programs assigned to them. This includes interviewing clients to assess their needs, informing them about service programs, and developing service plans tailored to their individual circumstances. The specialist will also be responsible for tracking expenditures, preparing budget estimates, and ensuring timely payment for services rendered. Collaboration with other agencies and participation in multi-disciplinary teams is essential to provide comprehensive support to clients. The position demands strong communication skills, both oral and written, as well as the ability to make sound judgments within the framework of existing laws and policies. The specialist must be adept at managing their own work activities, maintaining effective relationships, and staying updated on current trends in the social work field. This role may also require occasional work outside of normal business hours, particularly during community emergencies or disasters.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct Long-Term Services and Supports screenings.
  • Provide case management for companion and guardianship cases.
  • Investigate cases of alleged adult abuse, neglect, and/or exploitation.
  • Interpret laws, policies, and regulations as applied to Adult Services/APS.
  • Monitor, coordinate, and administer specific programs as assigned.
  • Interview and assess customer needs and relevant factors.
  • Inform clients of related service programs, rules, regulations, and their rights.
  • Present cases to determine appropriate services and write/implement service plans.
  • Provide case management services to monitor compliance.
  • Track expenditures and prepare/submits budget estimates.
  • Complete necessary federal, state, and local planning and reporting requirements.
  • Coordinate with other agencies and participate in multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Serve as a resource to clients and the community in area of expertise.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a Human Services field or any field with two years of related experience.
  • Working knowledge of social work principles and practices.
  • Understanding of human behavior and motivational theory.
  • Knowledge of laws, policies, and regulations relating to human services programs.
  • Skill in operating a motor vehicle and personal computer with associated software.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to interview, assess needs, counsel, and refer clients to other resources.
  • Capacity to make sound judgments within existing laws and policies.
  • Ability to respond to clients' emotions to accomplish service objectives.
  • Skill in planning and managing work activities, including service delivery and record keeping.

Nice-to-haves

  • Possession of BSW/MSW or a Master's degree in a related field.
  • Commonwealth of Virginia Social Worker license.
  • Experience in Adult Protective Services/Adult Services programs.
  • Experience in developing and implementing service plans.
  • Experience providing services to aging individuals and those with developmental/intellectual disabilities or mental illnesses.
  • Experience interviewing adults regarding abuse and/or neglect concerns.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish skills.
