About the position

Mission Essential is seeking skilled Linguists to provide essential interpretation, transcription, and translation services in support of ongoing and new U.S. operations and mission requirements across various OCONUS locations. The role of the linguist is critical as they will be responsible for delivering accurate translations and interpretations while providing cultural and ethnic context to ensure that the intended meaning of terms, phrases, or statements is conveyed effectively. This position requires a deep understanding of the nuances of language and the ability to navigate complex cultural landscapes, as the linguist will be expected to offer expert opinions on the most likely interpretations of communications that may have multiple valid meanings. The linguist will work in diverse environments, including but not limited to Jordan, KSA, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Iraq, Syria, and the UAE. They will be tasked with understanding and interpreting a wide range of dialects and languages, including Arabic MSA, Farsi, Baluchi, Urdu, Hebrew, Hindi, and various regional Arabic dialects. The ability to adapt to different cultural contexts and communicate effectively with local populations is essential for success in this role. The linguist will play a vital role in bridging communication gaps and ensuring that U.S. operations are conducted smoothly and effectively in these regions.

Responsibilities

  • Provide interpretation, transcription, and translation services for U.S. operations.
  • Deliver cultural and ethnic context for translations and interpretations.
  • Offer expert opinions on the meanings of terms and phrases with multiple interpretations.
  • Understand and interpret various dialects and languages as required by the mission.
  • Operate effectively within local populations and understand local customs.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in target language and English speaking and writing Level 3/3 of Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR); native proficiency preferred.
  • Ability to understand all speech in standard dialect and vocabulary with minimal need for paraphrasing or explanation.
  • Familiarity with local culture and customs.
