About the position

St. Thomas University invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, Assistant Professor of Fashion Design position within the Bachelor of Arts in Fashion Merchandising and Design program within the Gus Machado College of Business. This role offers a unique opportunity to be part of a diverse, mission-driven institution dedicated to fostering ethical leaders for a global community. The Assistant Professor of Fashion Design will contribute to curriculum development, assessment, and program growth, with a focus on hands-on teaching and innovative approaches in 3D design, technical design, and sustainability. This position emphasizes mentorship, fostering industry connections, and advancing the program's reputation nationally and internationally. The typical Fashion Design workload is 6 (3 credits) courses across two semesters and management of the Fashion Design and Innovation Center. We value faculty who can bring a fresh perspective to the ever-changing landscape of Fashion Design as the opportunities for Fashion Designers expand. The Fashion Design curriculum covers all facets of apparel design, technical design, textiles, design research, fashion illustration, product development, and trend forecasting. Students are prepared for careers in fashion design, including apparel design, technical design, CAD design, product development, and trend forecasting.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging, hands-on undergraduate courses in 3D design, technical design, pattern making, sewing, and other foundational and advanced topics in fashion design.
  • Design and refine curricula that align with industry standards and emerging trends, emphasizing experiential learning and sustainability.
  • Assist in recruiting and hiring qualified adjunct faculty to deliver the program's curriculum; developing onboarding and development opportunities.
  • Collaborate with faculty and administration to expand the Fashion Design program's scope, reputation, and industry relevance.
  • Provide academic advising and career guidance, including fostering a strong network of alumni and industry professionals.
  • Participate in program recruitment, admissions activities, exhibitions, and university service initiatives.
  • Maintain active relationships with the fashion industry to ensure the integration of current practices, tools, and trends into teaching.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Fashion Design or a closely related field.
  • At least one year of teaching experience in a higher education setting.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in 3D design, technical design, sewing, pattern making, and CAD software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Browzwear).

  • Industry experience in fashion design, particularly in technical design or collection development.
