About the position

Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) is seeking a dedicated FastForward/G3 Career Coach to join its Workforce Development and Continuing Education Division. This role is pivotal in guiding potential and current students through their educational journeys, helping them identify career and program pathways that align with their personal and professional goals. The Career Coach will work closely with the Dean of Workforce Development and Continuing Education, ensuring that students receive the support they need from the moment they express interest in a program until they are fully onboarded and enrolled. The primary responsibilities of the Career Coach include assisting students with registration and onboarding processes, maintaining regular communication with them, and keeping detailed records of student outreach and interactions. This position also involves connecting students with available college and community support services, as well as providing academic interventions when necessary. The Career Coach will play a crucial role in fostering a supportive environment that encourages students to overcome barriers to educational success and achieve their goals. In addition to the core responsibilities, the Career Coach may be required to perform other duties as assigned and assist the agency or state government in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor. This position is full-time, with a work schedule from Monday to Friday, 7:45 AM to 4:30 PM, and may require occasional evening and weekend hours. A one-year probationary period is required for both new hires and transfers.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students with registration and onboarding for programs.
  • Maintain regular communication with students after enrollment.
  • Keep detailed records of student outreach and interactions.
  • Connect students to available college and community support services.
  • Provide academic interventions when necessary.
  • Work with the Dean of Workforce Development and Continuing Education to identify career pathways for students.
  • Engage and motivate students to achieve their educational goals.

  • Experience working with racially, ethnically, economically, and age diverse individuals.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to engage and support students effectively.
  • Excellent customer service skills with the ability to follow up and follow through.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Proficient in technology, including Microsoft Office and Google Docs.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Desire to learn and grow professionally.

Nice-to-haves

  • Work experience in a higher education setting in advising or coaching.
  • Knowledge of financial aid and scholarship information.
  • Working knowledge of PeopleSoft and Navigate.
  • Knowledge of workforce-to-academic program pathways.
