About the position

The FDA Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Fellowship offers a research opportunity within the Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) at the FDA. This fellowship focuses on evaluating AI applications in medical devices, allowing fellows to engage in high-impact research and develop regulatory science tools. The position is full-time and hybrid, providing a unique chance to work alongside prominent scientists in the field.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in research evaluating artificial intelligence applications in medical devices.
  • Develop regulatory science tools for assessing new medical devices.
  • Conduct high-impact research and present findings to the scientific community.
  • Learn large scale software development for machine learning methods.
  • Develop test methods for assessing AI/ML model performance using large-scale data sets.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship, Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR), or valid immigration status for foreign nationals.
  • Background in software development, particularly in Python and scientific libraries (NumPy, SciPy, Scikit-learn).
  • Experience or knowledge in traditional and deep-learning-based ML methods (CNN, GAN).
  • Ability to conduct research and document processes and outcomes.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with image quality evaluation and synthetic imaging data.
  • Understanding of AI-enabled devices for image segmentation and classification.
  • Knowledge of bias, reproducibility, robustness, and generalizability of AI techniques.
