About the position

The Federal Work-Study Geology Assistant position at Central Oregon Community College (COCC) is designed for students to assist in organizing the geology department's collection of rocks, minerals, and fossils. This role aims to enhance the educational value of the collection for both COCC students and the wider community, particularly K-12 educators seeking resources. The student will be responsible for creating a labeled and accessible rock library, ensuring that the collection is well-organized and easy to use.

Responsibilities

  • Organize rocks, minerals, and fossils in the COCC Geology department collection.
  • Create a labeled and accessible rock library.
  • Identify common rocks, minerals, and fossils that currently lack labels.

Requirements

  • Must be offered and accepted Federal Work-Study for 2024-25.
  • Must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress for financial aid.
  • Ability to accurately identify rocks and minerals.
  • Ability to work without supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and faculty from diverse backgrounds.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with rock identification.
