About the position

The Federal Work Study-Research Lab Assistant position in the Department of Biology at Penn State offers part-time opportunities for students to engage in research related to SARS-CoV-2 in non-human mammals. This role involves a mix of fieldwork and laboratory tasks, providing valuable experience in disease ecology and epidemiology.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the completion of a USDA funded project to describe the host range and viral diversity of SARS-CoV-2 in non-human mammals.
• Set and check traps for fieldwork.
• Record data for animal handlers and label tubes.
• Autoclave supplies and prepare samples for analysis.
• Perform dissections and organize samples in the lab.
• Assist the research technician with various tasks.

Requirements

• Must be a current Penn State student eligible for Federal Work Study.
• Ability to work early mornings, late evenings, and some weekends.
• Willingness to perform fieldwork in various weather conditions.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in biological research or laboratory work.
• Familiarity with data recording and sample handling.
