About the position

At Smithfield Foods, we are excited to offer a rewarding opportunity for a Feed Mill Operator. This position is essential in ensuring the smooth operation of our feed mill, which plays a critical role in our production process. As a Feed Mill Operator, you will be trained to oversee various areas within the mill, including receiving, batching, production floor, and loadout. Your primary responsibility will be to ensure compliance with established procedures related to quality, productivity, and safety while performing your assigned duties. This role is vital in maintaining the high standards that Smithfield Foods is known for, and you will be part of a team that values collaboration and excellence. In this position, you will follow standard operating instructions and procedures, which include flushing procedures for batching and pelleting, as well as maintaining accurate records. You will operate various equipment and tools, such as computers, grinders, and forklifts, across all areas of the mill. Additionally, you will prepare and maintain shift activity reports, track production reports, and manage inventory for feed, bulk, and micro-ingredients. Your attention to detail will be crucial in regulating the flow of materials and ensuring that specified products are attained. Safety is a top priority at Smithfield Foods, and as a Feed Mill Operator, you will be responsible for maintaining a safe working environment for yourself and your colleagues. You will also be required to acquire and maintain necessary certifications, such as weigh master and forklift operator. Compliance with environmental laws and company policies is essential, and you will be expected to report any environmental issues to your supervisor immediately. This position offers a starting pay of $25.00 per hour and requires a commitment to producing high-quality pellet feed while working in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Follow standard operating instructions/procedures in all operator areas, including flushing procedures for batching and pelleting, along with record keeping.
  • Operate all equipment/tools (computer, grinders, tools, forklift, etc.) in all areas of the mill.
  • Prepare and maintain shift activity reports, track production reports, sampling reports, bag dump reports, reconciliations, etc.
  • Regulate flow of materials and observe flow to ensure attainment of specified products.
  • Perform daily feed, bulk and micro ingredient inventory.
  • Perform housekeeping duties as requested by the supervisor, keeping designated area clean while supporting co-workers in other areas.
  • Maintain and ensure the safety of all employees and assets of the company.
  • Acquire and maintain necessary certifications (weigh master, forklift, etc.).
  • Fill micro-ingredient, tote system, and maintain necessary stock at the batching areas and receiving when needed.
  • Comply with all environmental laws and procedures to which Smithfield subscribes.
  • Understand and apply company IPS and EMS policies and procedures in the performance of job duties.
  • Report all environmental issues immediately to the supervisor.
  • Read and understand the company's emergency notification process.
  • Conduct duties in a way that maintains compliance with ISO22000 Feed Safety and Quality Program, including opportunities for continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • Ability to read and understand documents such as safety rules, maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to recognize critical areas of the mill control feed/ingredient system.
  • Ability to read and speak English.
  • Basic computer skills desired.
  • Must be able to work an average of 50 hour weeks, including night, holiday and weekend when required.
  • Must be supportive of the mission of producing high quality pellet feed.
  • Must be tolerable and willing to learn and perform the different areas of the feed mill process.
  • Must be able to work weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to work well with others in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Ability to be respectful, approachable and team-oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.
