About the position

The Ferryboat Operator 1-3 position is responsible for operating and piloting state-owned ferry vessels under United States Coast Guard regulations. The role involves training under the supervision of a Ferryboat Operations Supervisor, maintaining operational logs, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols. The position is part of a career progression group, allowing for advancement based on experience and performance.

Responsibilities

  • Train under the guidance of a Ferryboat Operations Supervisor to operate and pilot ferry motor vessels carrying passengers on waterways.
  • Maintain operating logs and submit various reports on a regular basis.
  • Functionally supervise the crew on an assigned shift by issuing work assignments and reviewing work products.
  • Provide input on subordinates' performance to the Ferryboat Operations Supervisor for planning and evaluation.
  • Train to perform duties as a designated member of the crew in accordance with the vessel's USCG Certificate of Inspection requirements.
  • Lead and conduct fire and collision drills and participate in those drills on a bi-weekly schedule.
  • Inspect all fire suppression and life-saving equipment, machinery, rigging, and gear aboard vessels on a bi-weekly schedule and order needed repairs or replacements.
  • Ensure ferry vessels meet the established operation schedule.
  • Order fuel, materials, and supplies for vessels.
  • Perform other duties as necessary, including emergency/disaster support activities.

Requirements

  • Two years of experience in marine operations.
  • Possession of a U.S. Coast Guard credential such as Able-Bodied Seaman (AB) or Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED).
  • Possession of a current Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) at the time of appointment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with operating radar and VHF radio equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and emergency procedures for ferry operations.
