About the position

The Fiber Network Specialist position is a responsible and technical role focused on the installation, configuration, testing, operation, and maintenance of a fiber optic-based digital transport system utilized for high-speed data networks. This position is crucial for ensuring the reliability and efficiency of the fiber infrastructure deployed for data transmission. The Fiber Network Specialist will report directly to the Department Director or their designee, and will be expected to perform a variety of essential job functions that contribute to the overall performance of the fiber optic network. Key responsibilities include performing construction and maintenance tasks associated with fiber optic cable, operating various tools and equipment, and adhering to safety protocols. The specialist will be responsible for ensuring that the fiber optic network is thoroughly documented and will conduct periodic audits to confirm the accuracy of this documentation. Additionally, the role involves troubleshooting fiber network problems, performing fusion splicing of optical fibers, and testing and configuring media converter edge electronics hardware. The Fiber Network Specialist will also be tasked with conducting technical testing of fiber optic cables in the field, using specialized equipment such as an optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) to assess signal losses and pinpoint breaks in the cable. The position requires collaboration with Network Engineering staff to resolve equipment problems and performance issues, as well as the ability to communicate effectively with team members and customers. The specialist will also provide training and instruction to other personnel, ensuring that safety practices and proper equipment usage are upheld.

Responsibilities

  • Performs construction and maintenance job tasks associated with Fiber Optic cable.
  • Operates bucket trucks, hydraulic and handheld tools, and/or equipment as required.
  • Ensures the fiber optic network is completely documented.
  • Conducts periodic audits of fiber optic infrastructure to confirm documentation accuracy.
  • Works with Network Designer and Voice Systems Tech to assist and serve as technical back-up.
  • Troubleshoots fiber network problems, identifies issues, and creates solutions.
  • Performs fusion splicing of optical fibers, including new and repair splicing.
  • Assists with CAT-5 installations and troubleshooting as needed.
  • Tests, configures, installs, and troubleshoots media converter edge electronics hardware.
  • Conducts technical testing of fiber optic cables in the field using an OTDR.
  • Tests fiber optic cables to pinpoint breaks when troubleshooting customer circuits.
  • Consults Network Engineering staff to resolve and troubleshoot fiber network equipment problems.
  • Visually identifies fibers through labeling and color-coding, and inputs documentation notes into a database and CAD software.
  • Responds to system malfunctions, assessing situations and making repairs as needed.
  • Installs, configures, and troubleshoots network hardware at customer facilities.
  • Works directly with Telecommunications Network Systems Engineer to test and apply new telecommunication technologies.
  • Maintains and troubleshoots network devices for interconnectivity of the data network.
  • Evaluates new technology related to fiber optic systems and makes recommendations for enhancements.
  • Tracks usage of fiber splicing equipment to ensure adequate stock for daily activity.
  • Provides input to the development of the enterprise annual budget.
  • Communicates effectively with other employees and customers.
  • Assists in training and instruction of other personnel.

Requirements

  • Technical skills in installation, configuration, testing, and maintenance of fiber optic systems.
  • Experience with fiber optic cable construction and maintenance.
  • Ability to operate bucket trucks and various tools and equipment safely.
  • Knowledge of safety precautions in field and substation environments.
  • Skills in using electrical and electronic test equipment such as OTDR and volt-ohm meters.
  • Ability to read and interpret service manuals, blueprints, and diagrams.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to make independent judgments.
  • Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions and at various heights.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and reports.
