About the position

The Fiber Optic Technician for the Data Center will play a crucial role in the installation, testing, and maintenance of fiber optic systems within a data center environment. This position requires a hands-on approach to cabling and termination, where the technician will be responsible for mounting and installing racks, patch panels, and fiber optic hardware. The technician will also ensure proper grounding for racks, equipment, and cables as required. A significant part of the role involves performing various tests, including continuity tests on horizontal and riser cables, utilizing tools such as volt-ohmmeters, and troubleshooting issues such as opens, crosses, shorts, and transposed pairs on cables. The technician will be expected to install various types of connectors, including LC, SC, ST, FC, FDDI, SMA, and MPO/MTP connectors for both multi-mode and single-mode fiber optics. In addition to installation and testing, the Fiber Optic Technician will be responsible for terminating simplex and duplex jumper cords, as well as breaking out outside plant fiber. The technician will also handle indoor tight buffered multimode and single-mode fiber terminations and install fan-out kits, including buffer tubes. A critical aspect of the job is to calculate end-to-end loss budgets in accordance with TIA/EIA standards for both multimode and single-mode fiber. The technician must ensure that all paperwork, including timesheets, material transfers, work orders, and change orders, is completed accurately and on time. The role may also require providing onsite support after business hours as part of an on-call schedule and traveling to various sites as needed. Testing responsibilities include using an OTDR, Fluke, and EFXO for troubleshooting and identifying problems across the network. The technician will perform mechanical and fusion splicing with all types of fiber cables, including building entrance splices, maintenance space, and direct buried splices. The position demands a self-motivated individual who can promote the company culture and mission while acting as a liaison with customer representatives. Strong problem-solving skills, critical thinking abilities, and effective communication skills are essential for success in this role. The technician must also be physically capable of working at heights, lifting heavy equipment, and working in confined spaces while adhering to safety protocols.
