About the position

The Fiber Optics Technician II position at Prism Maritime involves the installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of fiber optic systems on naval vessels and shore installations. The role requires a strong understanding of photonics and fiber optics, along with hands-on experience in connectorization and system testing. Technicians will work independently and provide guidance to entry-level staff while adhering to NAVSEA specifications and safety practices.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate knowledge of photonics and fiber optics for shipboard and shore installations.
  • Work from blueprints, drawings, technical manuals, and other documentation.
  • Identify and install/remove fiber optic interconnection box (FOICB) equipment using hand tools.
  • Lay out and drill/punch entry points to tube routing boxes (TRBs) for BOF trunks.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, operate, install, test, and check out Navy ship or shore fiber optic systems.
  • Build fiber optic connectors including STs, SCs, and LCs on various fiber types.
  • Perform shipboard fiber optic fusion splicing and support M28876 connector building.
  • Prepare for the installation of blown optical fiber (BOF) and assist with its installation.
  • Conduct fiber optic cable/connector testing using instruments like VFLs and OTDRs.
  • Provide technical guidance to entry-level installers and work independently.

Requirements

  • Successfully completed the NAVSEA Fiberoptic Core Module.
  • Successfully completed the NAVSEA BOF Methods and Components Module.
  • Successfully completed the NAVSEA Cable Handling, Penetration and Repair/Modification Module.
  • Successfully completed the NAVSEA FOICB/TRB Forming, Routing and Shaping Module.
  • Successfully completed the NAVSEA Single Ferrule Module.
  • Successfully completed the NAVSEA Cable Puller Module.
  • Successfully completed the NAVSEA Multi-Terminus Module.
  • Successfully completed the NAVSEA Fusion Splicing Module.
  • Successfully completed the NAVSEA Optical Testing Module.
  • Successfully completed the NAVSEA Supervisor Q.A. Inspector module.
  • Possess a valid OSHA 10 Maritime Card.
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent may be required depending on contract stipulations.
  • Minimum of two years' participation in an approved electronic/electrical apprenticeship program or four years' experience in shipboard installation work.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with NAVSEA drawings.
