About the position

We are seeking a full-time Field Application Engineer at Garmin USA, located in Charleston, South Carolina. In this role, you will be responsible for providing engineering support to Marine and Recreational Vehicle (RV) Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) customers, ensuring the successful integration of Garmin equipment into their vehicles and vessels. This position requires a proactive approach to customer engagement, where you will work directly with clients to assess their electrical system needs, develop schematics, and provide line-side support as a liaison between the customer and Garmin's technical team. You will analyze customer requirements and suggest system solutions, partnering with customer engineering teams on system integration. Your responsibilities will include developing wiring schematics for customer use, mentoring customers in solving technical issues, and acting as a bridge between customers and the engineering team for any custom software interface solutions. You will also be tasked with developing electrical system configuration and automation schemes based on customer specifications, ensuring that designs are seen through to production. Collaboration with Field Service Engineers and Sales staff will be essential to service accounts effectively. Additionally, you will train customer engineering teams in the installation, setup, and configuration of Garmin equipment, ensuring that Garmin remains competitive and cutting-edge in the industry. As part of your role, you will identify and resolve defects as required, providing feedback and recommended solutions to the engineering team regarding product performance and suggestions for future improvements. Clear communication of work status to your manager and thorough documentation of your work will be crucial. You will apply design standards and procedures to implement solutions for vessels or vehicles and may be required to attend trade shows and dealer events as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Work directly with the customer to assess electrical system needs and develop schematics.
  • Participate in line-side support acting as a customer liaison with Garmin's technical team.
  • Analyze customer requirements and suggest system solutions.
  • Partner with customer engineering teams on system integration.
  • Develop wiring schematics for customer use as needed.
  • Direct and mentor customers in solving technical issues or problems.
  • Act as a liaison between customers and the engineering team on custom software interface solutions.
  • Develop electrical system configuration/automation schemes based on customer specifications.
  • Team with Field Service Engineers and Sales staff to service accounts.
  • Train customer engineering teams in the installation, setup, and configuration of Garmin equipment.
  • Ensure Garmin remains competitive and cutting-edge with competitors and related applications.
  • Identify and resolve defects as required, escalating issues to the engineering team if needed.
  • Provide feedback and recommended solutions to the engineering team on product performance.
  • Communicate status of work clearly and document work in an organized manner.
  • Apply design standards and procedures to implement vessel or vehicle solutions.
  • Attend trade shows and dealer events as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or another technical engineering-related field.
  • Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0).
  • Previous experience or exposure to implementing the design and development of electrical systems for road-going vehicles or marine vessels.
  • Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Positive, detail-oriented, organized, team-oriented, and a driven problem solver.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage time in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment with excellent follow-up skills.
  • Flexibility to travel (more than 30% of the time).
