About the position

The Field Electrical Engineer Trainee position at the State of Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) is designed for individuals seeking to develop technical skills in the field of electrical engineering, specifically related to traffic signal systems. This role involves training to design, support, and repair electronic equipment for over 2,500 traffic signal intersections across the state. The position offers a structured development program lasting one to three years, leading to a promotion to Design Engineer 1 (Electrical) upon successful completion.

Responsibilities

• Receive training to develop technical skills for designing and supporting traffic signal electronic equipment.
• Develop and implement traffic signal system timing plans.
• Review shop drawings and signal design layout plans prepared by the Department and private sector engineers.
• Maintain signal equipment in the field to ensure continued operation of the State's traffic signal systems.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
• Valid driver's license.
• Ability to travel for training, conferences, and field reviews as necessary.
• Knowledge of basic engineering theories, principles, and methods.
• Skill in the use of drafting and calculating instruments.

Nice-to-haves

• Master's degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering or related field.
• Experience with engineering or maintenance of electronic equipment.
• Experience interpreting traffic signal plans and wiring diagrams.
• Familiarity with networking protocols and Internet Protocol (IP) addressing.
• Experience using Bluebeam and Office 365 tools.
