About the position

The Field Electrical Engineer Trainee position at the State of Connecticut's Department of Transportation is designed for individuals seeking to develop technical skills in electrical engineering, specifically related to traffic signal systems. This role involves training to design, support, and repair electronic equipment for over 2,500 traffic signalized intersections. The position offers a structured development program lasting one to three years, leading to a promotion to Design Engineer 1 (Electrical) upon successful completion.

Responsibilities

  • Receive training in technical skills for designing and supporting traffic signal electronic equipment.
  • Develop and implement traffic signal system timing plans.
  • Review shop drawings and signal design layout plans prepared by the Department and private sector engineers.
  • Maintain signal equipment in the field to ensure continued operation of the State's traffic signal systems.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must have a valid driver's license and maintain it throughout employment.
  • Must meet the minimum qualifications for Design Engineer 1 (Electrical) by the end of the development program.
  • Current students graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering by December 2024 are encouraged to apply.
