About the position

As the Coordinator of Field Operations for the Fayetteville Woodpeckers, you will play a vital role in ensuring that the baseball playing surface meets Major League standards and is recognized as best-in-class for Minor League Baseball. This full-time position involves assisting the Director of Field Operations in the care, maintenance, and improvement of the field, which is essential for creating memorable experiences for fans and players alike. You will oversee the grounds crew and manage various tasks related to maintaining the integrity of the playing surface, ensuring it is always in optimal condition for professional baseball events. Your responsibilities will include daily infield maintenance, overseeing mowing, fertilizing, and treating both the grass and infield areas of the ballpark. You will ensure compliance with all regulations regarding the application of fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides, and prepare the field for game day, addressing any irregularities that may pose safety risks. Additionally, you will assist in game day preparations, particularly in managing the field during inclement weather conditions. As a leader, you will be responsible for hiring, training, and evaluating field operations staff, ensuring that all team members are equipped to maintain the field to the highest standards. In the absence of the Director of Field Operations, you will take on all field activities, supervise staff, and communicate effectively with front office employees. This position requires a strong work ethic, excellent communication skills, and a desire to excel in the field of sports management. You will be working in both an office and stadium environment, utilizing standard office equipment and groundskeeping tools to perform your duties effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure that the playing surface is always in optimal condition for professional baseball events including daily infield maintenance.
  • Assist in the oversight of the mowing, fertilizing, treating, and maintenance of both the grass areas of the ballpark as well as the infield areas.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations regarding the application of fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides.
  • Ensure that the field is fully prepared and ready to use on game day, free from irregularities in all playing surfaces that may pose safety issues for the players.
  • Assist in oversight of game day preparations of the field, ensuring appropriate precautions and actions are taken in the event of inclement weather conditions.
  • Hire, train, and evaluate field operations staff.
  • Proficient in the use and troubleshooting of mowers, tractors, irrigation systems, fertilizer and chemical applicators, and other equipment used in maintaining the field.
  • In the absence of the Director of Field Operations, perform all field activities, supervise all staff, and effectively communicate with front office employees.

Requirements

  • 2+ years as a professional or college baseball sports management professional.
  • History of successful sod installation work on short timeframes.
  • High-school diploma/equivalent required, college degree preferred.
  • Proven experience working with baseball players, coaches, and baseball administrators on a day-to-day basis.
  • 2+ years related experience including a solid knowledge of turf maintenance supplies, materials, and equipment and management of a baseball complex/stadium.
  • Knowledge in the practices and principles related to turf maintenance.
  • 1+ years supervisory experience in a similar capacity.
  • Pesticide license in turf/ornamental landscaping; Turf 3L Pesticide license; Knowledge of IPM (Integrated Pest Management) preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organization skills, strong work ethic, desire to excel, and willingness to learn.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to direct and lead an assigned seasonal Field Operations staff.
