About the position

As a Field Service Engineer III at Thermo Fisher Scientific, you will play a crucial role in the Materials and Structural Analysis Division, specifically within the Electron Microscopy (EM) business. This position involves performing on-site installations, servicing, and repairs of complex electron microscopy equipment and systems, including Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). You will be responsible for ensuring that the equipment operates at optimal levels, investigating and improving operational quality, and providing technical support to customers. Your role will also include instructing customers on the operation and maintenance of the systems, serving as a liaison between the company and customers on both administrative and technical matters, and conducting on-site installations of various electron microscopy systems and their options. In this position, you will be the primary regional field service engineer, ensuring that customer needs are met by applying appropriate resources. You will conduct on-site installations of sophisticated equipment, follow testing procedures to ensure proper working order, and perform scheduled maintenance visits. Troubleshooting and repair support will be a significant part of your responsibilities, as well as cultivating positive working relationships with customers and colleagues. You will also be expected to complete technical training and seek additional learning opportunities to enhance your expertise in the field. Your role will require you to travel frequently, often on short notice, to customer sites to resolve issues or support other field service personnel. You will be responsible for completing and submitting field service reports, performing preventative maintenance on assigned tools, and providing training for customers and users on system maintenance. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to mentor new field service engineers and provide feedback to product quality teams, ensuring that Thermo Fisher Scientific continues to deliver high-quality products and services.

Responsibilities

  • Perform on-site installation, servicing, and repair of complex electron microscopy equipment and systems.
  • Investigate and improve operational quality of system equipment.
  • Instruct customers in the operation and maintenance of the systems.
  • Serve as company liaison with customers on administrative and technical matters for assigned projects.
  • Conduct on-site installations of the full range of Thermo Fisher Scientific electron microscopy systems and their associated options.
  • Ensure customer needs are met by applying appropriate resources.
  • Conduct on-site scheduled planned maintenance visits.
  • Provide troubleshooting and repair support for customers and other field service personnel.
  • Cultivate and develop positive working relationships with customers, system users, and company personnel.
  • Complete and submit field service reports.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on assigned tools.
  • Provide training for customers and users on system maintenance.
  • Make yourself available to train and mentor new field service engineers.
  • Provide feedback to product quality teams.
  • Provide appropriate input in writing updating and correcting various Thermo Fisher system documentation.

Requirements

  • University degree in electronics, physics, engineering, computer science or similar field preferred; or 5-10 years of equivalent combination of education, skills and experience.
  • 5+ years' experience operating, troubleshooting, repairing and calibrating complex analysis tools such as SEM, TEM, FIB, Prober or similar systems is a plus but not required.
  • Experience with Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) is a plus but not required.
  • Experience operating O-scopes, digital voltmeter and logical problem solving.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex technical issues.
  • Ability to partner effectively with customers and colleagues.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication, teamwork/building, time management, organizational, problem solving, conflict management and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure, with a consistent record to make decisions with minimal direct supervision.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and passport and travel regionally and internationally as the need arises.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) systems.
  • Knowledge of operating O-scopes and digital voltmeters.
