GDIT has an exciting opportunity available for a Field Service Engineer, in Support of AFRICOM in Stuttgart Germany. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting site surveys to prepare for network upgrades and to produce distinctive work packages for implementation actions. This role involves undertaking site survey activities to provide engineering and supporting documentation, as well as testing network hardware at various locations throughout Europe. The engineer will prepare floor space diagrams, rack equipment diagrams, connectivity tables, and installation checklists, ensuring that all necessary documentation is in place for effective network management. In this position, the Field Service Engineer will plan, deploy, install, test, troubleshoot, and repair standard network infrastructure systems. This includes the installation and/or removal of equipment into racks or cabinets, cable ladders, and patch panels, as well as the installation of network devices and the interface cables required for interconnectivity. The engineer will also be tasked with engineering new designs to resolve cabinet management and network device issues, troubleshooting and repairing network connectivity on various devices, including routers and switches in telecommunications rooms. The role requires experience with Telecommunication Room Remediation, Network Migration, LCR Life Cycle Replacement, and Help Desk Remedy. The engineer will be responsible for organizing network rooms and collaborating with customers to upgrade network equipment throughout Europe. They will maintain the smooth operation of local area, worldwide, and virtual private networks (VPN), planning, evaluating, designing, and coordinating the installation and/or reconfiguration of hardware and software elements of data and/or voice communication networks. The engineer will also be responsible for testing from source to destination, identifying and resolving all issues, and repairing or replacing damaged cables, faceplates, outlets, and circuit breakers as necessary. Additionally, the Field Service Engineer will manage cable organization, verify all labels, and update or generate documentation. They will maintain technical expertise in all areas of networks and computer hardware and software interconnection, including routers, switchers, firewalls, hubs, bridges, and gateways. The engineer may propose solutions to management to ensure all communications requirements are met based on future needs and current usage, configuring such solutions to optimize cost savings. They will prepare or ensure that appropriate network documentation exists, including operational instructions, and provide regular monitoring and network analysis regarding short- and long-range planning for in-house systems. The role may also involve coordinating third-party maintenance for network equipment and designing network segments that include the selection and recommendation of hardware and software packages. The engineer will provide embedded support at customer locations, install and maintain network facilities, and perform data or voice network configurations and configuration changes of various voice or data equipment. The candidate will interpret design plans provided by the customer and provide escort to vendors or personnel to telecommunications rooms or other secure areas. Travel is required to other European countries, and the candidate is expected to perform additional duties in support of the contract while maintaining up-to-date IT certifications.
