About the position

The Field Service Technician-Network is responsible for installing, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining telecommunications products and equipment, including fiber optic and copper cables. This role involves direct customer interaction, providing exceptional service, and identifying sales opportunities for TDS services. The technician will work on various systems, ensuring high-quality service delivery and customer satisfaction.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, troubleshoots, tests, splices, repairs, and maintains telephone equipment and general network equipment.
  • Installs, configures, maintains, and repairs Key Systems, PBX, Centrex Systems, and other business systems.
  • Identifies location of defective cable using various test equipment and repairs buried, aerial, underground and/or customer cable.
  • Locates cable and fiber in response to customer requests and/or construction needs.
  • Operates construction equipment and climbs poles as required.
  • Keeps orderly log of all locate requests in the exchange area.
  • Performs cable fault acceptance tests on newly constructed facilities.
  • Provides troubleshooting support techniques and corrections.
  • Responds to trouble dispatches and provides high-level support for record systems.
  • Educates and sells TDS products and services to customers.
  • Completes all related paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Maintains work equipment and company vehicle, stocking supplies as needed.
  • Promotes safety and accident prevention as part of daily functions.
  • Maintains inventory including purchasing, receiving, and tracking equipment and materials.

Requirements

  • 1+ year basic technical telecommunications experience or current/prior military service with honorable discharge.
  • 6+ months of basic fiber optic and/or copper cable splicing and repair, installation and repair, or switch training.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to maintain DOT requirements for operating vehicles over 10,000 lbs.
  • Strong technical understanding of fiber and copper plant installation and troubleshooting.
  • Understanding of telecommunication products and services including Inside Wiring/Cable, Internet/Intranet, and Fiber Optic Transmission.
  • Practical knowledge/experience with computer applications including MS Office Suite and Trouble/Repair/Dispatch Systems.
  • Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.
  • Demonstrated customer service and sales skills.

  • Experience with project management of system installations.
  • Familiarity with safety policies and procedures in telecommunications.
