About the position

As a Field Service Technician at TDS Telecommunications, you will be responsible for on-site installations, troubleshooting, repairs, and maintenance of telecommunications products and equipment. This role involves direct customer interaction, where you will provide exceptional service, identify customer needs, and promote TDS services and products. You will work with various telecommunications solutions, including telephony, video, internet, and high-speed networks, ensuring customer satisfaction and seeking sales opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with and perform on-site installations, troubleshooting, testing, splicing, repairing, and maintaining telephone and network equipment.
  • Identify location of defective cable using test equipment and repair various types of cables.
  • Locate cable and fiber in response to customer requests and construction needs.
  • Climb poles and operate construction equipment as required.
  • Mark company underground and buried facilities to prevent damage during construction.
  • Maintain logs of all locate requests in the exchange area.
  • Perform cable fault acceptance tests on newly constructed facilities.
  • Provide troubleshooting support and respond to trouble dispatches.
  • Enhance and maintain record systems related to network elements and customer service.
  • Deliver excellent customer service and proactively educate customers about TDS products and services.

Requirements

  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to follow TDS attendance guidelines to meet business needs.
  • Must successfully complete customer-specific requirements, including background checks.
  • Availability for on-call/standby responsibilities and occasional travel.
  • Willingness to work overtime as needed.
  • Must pass all components of the Safety Course curriculum upon hire.
  • Ability to maintain DOT requirements for operating vehicles over 10,000 lbs.
  • A+ certification and computer networking experience are required.
  • Understanding of telecommunication products and services, including inside wiring, internet, and fiber optic transmission.
  • Practical knowledge of computer applications such as databases and MS Office Suite.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated customer service and sales skills, with effective communication abilities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with structured cabling and video/CATV/DBS installation.
  • Knowledge of RUS Standards and grounding practices.
  • Experience with inventory systems and cable locating.
