About the position

The Finance and Budget Assistant position at the United Nations Secretariat involves supporting the financial operations of peacekeeping missions. The role is crucial for ensuring effective budget preparation, financial reporting, and compliance with UN regulations. The assistant will work closely with Finance/Budget Officers to manage financial data, prepare budget proposals, and assist in financial transactions, contributing to the overall efficiency of the Office of Programme Planning, Finance and Budget.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the preparation of supporting documents for budget proposals.
  • Supports Finance/Budget Officers in generating expenditure reports and preliminary analyses.
  • Assists in developing resource requirements for budget submissions.
  • Researches and compiles data for budget reviews and analyses.
  • Consolidates data for budget performance submissions and reports.
  • Reconciles complex accounting transactions and records financial transactions.
  • Assists in processing payments to governments for goods and services.
  • Drafts memoranda and responds to queries from staff and third parties.
  • Collects and analyzes data for presentations and reports.
  • Maintains up-to-date files and provides administrative support to the unit.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A minimum of seven years of experience in finance, budget, or administrative services is required (five years with a first-level university degree).
  • Experience with information technology programs related to spreadsheets, databases, and word processing is desirable.
  • Experience working with senior officials in the UN or similar organizations is desirable.
  • Experience with enterprise resource planning systems (such as SAP) is desirable.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
