About the position

The Finance and Payroll Specialist at Big Sur Land Trust plays a crucial role in supporting the financial reporting and human resource needs of the organization. This position is responsible for managing payroll activities, performing various accounting duties, and coordinating HR activities, all while contributing to the mission of land conservation and community engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and coordinate payroll activities including processing new hires, terminations, tax changes, and direct deposits.
  • Ensure timely and accurate processing of accounts payable and perform monthly journal entry activities.
  • Conduct monthly bank and credit card reconciliations and process cash receipts.
  • Review, audit, and process employee expense reimbursements, ensuring accuracy and adherence to policies.
  • Maintain accounting department files and records and perform general clerical duties such as filing and photocopying.
  • Assist with the administration of HR policies and procedures in compliance with legal requirements.
  • Participate in the onboarding process of new employees and conduct exit interviews, communicating findings to management.
  • Coordinate the distribution of employee policy handbooks and manage insurance open enrollment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree (B.A.) or equivalent experience.
  • Two years of related experience, preferably in a non-profit setting.
  • Strong command of Microsoft Excel and proficiency in accounting software.
  • Proficiency in Paychex Payroll and MIP accounting software is a plus.
  • Knowledge of debits, credits, and double-entry accounting journal entries.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in human resources activities and employee relations.
  • Familiarity with CRM systems and their reconciliation with accounting systems.
