About the position

The Finance Director at the ACLU of Iowa is a senior staff position responsible for overseeing financial and administrative management within the organization. This role requires a proactive and organized individual who can handle a variety of accounting, human resources, and office management tasks while fostering a culture of equity and inclusion. The Finance Director will work closely with the Executive Director and other staff to ensure financial compliance, manage budgets, and support the organization's mission of defending civil liberties and rights.

Responsibilities

  • Perform essential day-to-day financial functions such as maintaining financial accounts, preparing deposits, and paying invoices.
  • Develop and ensure compliance with financial reporting and operating policies in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Assist in preparation of an annual budget, monitoring all expenditures, and facilitating regular communications with director-level staff regarding budget variance and forecasting.
  • Ensure timely and accurate completion of consolidated financial reports, including preparing documentation for annual audits and coordinating with independent auditors.
  • Prepare periodic reports of grant fund usage and maintain required records of grant expenses in accordance with grant agreements.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate banking relationships and advise on investment of non-restricted funds.
  • Update and ensure compliance with the Employee Manual and manage employee payroll and benefits programs.
  • Collaborate across the organization to coordinate hiring logistics, onboarding, offboarding, and training on finance and HR matters.
  • Perform general office management tasks including procuring and maintaining office supplies and equipment.
  • Provide administrative support for the board of directors, including attending meetings and maintaining records.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and new accounting standards affecting not-for-profit organizations.
  • Experience with QuickBooks, preferably QuickBooks Online.
  • Knowledge of human resources management principles and payroll software.
  • Experience in analyzing financial information and performing reconciliations between QuickBooks and standalone databases.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to identify problems and generate solutions.

Nice-to-haves

  • CPA license preferred but not required.
  • Experience with multi-state payroll is a plus.
  • Experience with formal database applications is a plus.
