About the position

The Finance & Planning Analyst position at Michigan Technological University is a full-time, 12-month role within the Budget and Planning Office and the Information Technology Department. This position is crucial for overseeing the financial operations of the Department of Information Technology and assisting the Director of Budget and Financial Planning with financial analysis across various university operations and projects. The analyst will report to both the Director of Budget and Financial Planning and the Chief Information Officer, ensuring a dual focus on financial management and strategic planning. In this role, the Finance & Planning Analyst will serve as a financial expert, providing essential counsel to the Chief Information Officer regarding budgetary and cost information. This guidance is vital for informed decision-making and regular reporting to the IT leadership team. The analyst will be responsible for performing complex budget projections, analyzing actual financial activities, and conducting cost feasibility studies to support effective planning and decision-making processes. The position also involves conducting periodic reviews of purchasing and capital expenditures to ensure cost-effectiveness. The analyst will identify and plan both short- and long-term financial goals for the Information Technology department and other university operations. Utilizing systems such as Banner and WebFOCUS, the analyst will access critical information related to student employment, finance, and human resources. Additionally, the Finance & Planning Analyst will manage and track all IT program budgets, ensuring that all financial transactions are accurately coded according to university policies. The role includes preparing and analyzing budget reports and statements for both internal and external stakeholders, as well as collaborating with various departments to foster successful working relationships. The analyst will also participate in university committees and provide functional supervision over clerical support staff and student assistants, contributing to a culture of safety and effective teamwork.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a financial expert and provide counsel to the Chief Information Officer on budget and cost information.
  • Perform complex budget projections, analysis of actual activity, and cost feasibility studies.
  • Conduct periodic reviews of cost-effective purchasing and capital expenditures.
  • Identify and plan short- and long-range financial goals for the Information Technology department and other University operations.
  • Utilize Banner and WebFOCUS to access information regarding student employment, finance, and human resources information.
  • Monitor and collaborate with Information Technology including day-to-day, monthly and year-end operations.
  • Plan, develop, manage, and track all Information Technology program budgets.
  • Ensure all revenue, deposit, and expense transactions are coded according to Information Technology & University policy.
  • Analyze and prepare budget reports, statements, and spreadsheets for internal and external use.
  • Work with Director of Budget and Financial Planning and Chief Information Officer in budget forecasting and the creation of fiscal controls and records.
  • Prepare and submit annual reports including Educause Core Data Survey, Campus Computing Survey, and other compliance related documents.
  • Build and foster successful working relationships with other areas such as Financial Services and Operations, Advancement, and Financial Aid.
  • Apply safety related knowledge, skills and practices to everyday work.
  • Provide leadership to foster a culture of safety.
  • Participate in University committees, as appropriate.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.
  • Advanced software competency including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and presentation applications.
  • Experience working in the areas of financial management, accounting, and/or budgeting.
  • Working knowledge of organizational business systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Two years' experience in accounting, financial management and planning, budgeting, and/or data analysis.
  • Bachelor's degree in a business-related field.
  • Master's degree.
  • Experience working in a collegiate setting.

Benefits

  • Negotiable salary starting at no less than $50,000.
