About the position

The Financial Analyst position at UC San Diego's Viterbi Family Department of Ophthalmology involves supporting the department's financial analysis and academic functions. The role includes transactional efforts that aid in the academic, clinical, and research missions across multiple divisions. The incumbent will work collaboratively with division administrators and staff to process transactions, identify financial risks, and propose solutions, while ensuring adherence to relevant policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Support the development of the department through financial analysis and academic functions.
  • Process transactions and identify financial risks, proposing solutions as necessary.
  • Audit transactions to verify adherence to UC, UCSD, UC Health Science, and Department of Ophthalmology policies.
  • Perform financial and operational transactional roles, including approval of employee reimbursements and expense transactions.
  • Assist with departmental recruitment, visa processing, and timekeeping matters.
  • Evaluate significant business needs and provide recommended solutions for complex issues.
  • Analyze financial and operational proposals and relevant policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Convert financial data into actionable information for forecasts and recommendations.

Requirements

  • Four years of related experience or a Bachelor's degree in a related area.
  • Basic knowledge of finance policies, practices, and systems, preferably in a university environment.
  • Ability to gather information and perform basic financial analysis assignments.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in spreadsheet and database software for financial analysis and reporting, particularly Microsoft Excel.
  • Basic interpersonal skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to multi-task in a high-volume environment and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Understanding of internal control practices and their impact on university resources.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with UCSD applications, including Oracle and Concur.
  • Ability to evaluate information against relevant policies and procedures.
  • Experience in documenting reporting procedures and requirements in an organized manner.
