About the position

The Financial Analyst 3 (FA3) position at the University of California, Berkeley, is a critical role within the Department of Physics, which is recognized as one of the top physics departments globally. The position also involves performing complex financial research and analysis for various internal constituents, including staff and faculty salary budgets, contracts, grants, and endowments. The FA3 will coordinate and implement budget allocations, maintain the department's chart of accounts, and ensure compliance with internal controls and government regulations. The role requires strong interpersonal skills, as the analyst will need to educate stakeholders on financial tools and software, and contribute to customer support in various financial activities. The FA3 will also be responsible for SAS-115 reporting requirements and monitoring compliance with regulatory costing principles. Responsibilities

  • Assist in overseeing and coordinating the annual internal Department of Physics budget process.
  • Work with unit managers to create detailed annual budgets and prepare regular financial reports.
  • Provide analytical support for complex budget, financial, or resource analysis projects, including fiscal close.
  • Develop key management reports to enable decision-making and provide analysis and performance metrics.
  • Perform complex financial or resource research and studies for various internal department constituents.
  • Coordinate and implement department budget allocations and maintain the department chart of accounts.
  • Prepare, review, and approve financial transactions, ensuring internal controls are maintained.
  • Monitor activities for compliance with government regulatory costing principles.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Advanced knowledge of financial or accounting concepts, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to independently gather required information and perform financial analysis assignments.
  • Proven ability to present information verbally and in writing clearly and concisely.
  • Proven ability using spreadsheet and database software for complex financial analysis and fiscal management.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a service orientation and critical thinking skills.
  • Attention to detail and ability to multi-task in a high-volume environment.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of internal control practices.
