About the position

The Financial Analyst position at UC San Diego is a critical role within the Department of Surgery, which is one of the largest departments in the School of Medicine. This department comprises a diverse team of over 100 full-time faculty members, numerous voluntary faculty, and a significant number of physicians and trainees. The department's annual expenditures exceed $66.5 million, with a global research portfolio of over $19 million. The Financial Analyst will work in a hybrid capacity, balancing onsite work at the La Jolla Medical Center with remote responsibilities. This role is essential for supporting the department's financial operations and ensuring effective resource allocation as the department aims for aggressive growth in the Health System's clinical strategic plan. In this position, the Financial Analyst will utilize professional concepts and apply organizational policies and procedures to resolve various financial issues. The incumbent will be responsible for performing basic financial and resource analysis to understand past performance and determine present and future resource allocations. This includes regular reviews and analyses of data to identify problematic areas and irregular expenditures, researching causes, and making recommendations for corrective actions. The role also involves processing, reviewing, and approving financial transactions, as well as providing regular and ad hoc reporting on the operating performance of departmental and income funds. The Financial Analyst will prepare basic financial and resource reports for internal department constituents, which may include periodic financial reports, salary budgets, and analyses related to contracts, grants, and endowments. The incumbent will also provide transactional support across various divisions, addressing specific issues that may impact the department's financial portfolio. This position requires a strong understanding of finance policies and practices, as well as the ability to communicate effectively with internal stakeholders and provide oversight on financial reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic financial or resource analysis to understand past performance and determine present and future performance and/or resource allocations.
  • Regularly review and analyze data, identify problematic areas and irregular expenditures; research causes, and make recommendations on possible corrective courses of action.
  • Apply financial concepts to process, review, and approve financial transactions.
  • Responsible for regular and ad hoc reporting on operating performance of departmental and income funds.
  • Approve financial transactions, verifying chart string and funding, and making recommendations as needed.
  • Provide transactional support across the divisions, targeting specific issues that may impact a department financial portfolio.
  • Prepare basic financial and resource reports and/or analysis for internal department constituents, including periodic financial reports and salary budgets.
  • Provide oversight and recommendations with monthly financial summary reporting to clinical and non-research faculty.

Requirements

  • Six (6) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor's degree in related area plus two (2) years of related experience/training.
  • Working knowledge of finance policies, practices, and systems.
  • Ability to gather reasonably retrievable information to organize, and perform basic financial analysis assignments.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively present information verbally and in writing clearly and concisely.
  • Demonstrated ability using spreadsheet and database software for moderately complex financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills at all levels within the unit; excellent service orientation and critical thinking skills; and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability using organizational skills to multi-task in a high-volume environment.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Ability to function as a member of a team.
  • Intermediate knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources.
