About the position

Matrix Human Services is dedicated to educating children, supporting families, and rebuilding neighborhoods in Detroit. The Financial Analyst will play a crucial role in analyzing past financial performance to predict future outcomes and advise the organization on its financial strategy. This position is essential for ensuring that the financial health of the organization aligns with its mission of serving over 25,000 individuals and families annually, including operating the largest Head Start program in Detroit, which serves more than 1,900 children. The Financial Analyst will be responsible for analyzing business and financial data by program to ensure the completion of spending plans. This includes creating financial models based on analyses to support organizational decision-making, developing financial plans and reports for organizational leaders, and analyzing trends within the non-profit industry to make informed recommendations. The role also involves evaluating capital expenditures and depreciation, developing automated reporting and forecasting tools for more efficient data use, and providing support for the detailed annual financial budget and monthly financial forecasts. In addition, the Financial Analyst will assist in preparing weekly, monthly, and quarterly financial analysis schedules that compare actual performance against budgeted figures. They will provide financial analysis support for department and program managers, develop ad hoc reports and special studies, and identify any unforeseen under or overspending. The position also includes designing and administering key performance metrics and performing other related duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze non-profit industry trends and make recommendations based on those trends.
  • Evaluate capital expenditures and depreciation.

  • Provide support for detailed annual financial budget and monthly financial forecasts.
  • Assist in preparation of weekly, monthly, and quarterly financial analysis schedules of actual versus budget variances.
  • Provide financial analysis support for department/program managers.
  • Develop ad hoc reports, special studies, and financial analysis which drive the behavior of the business.
  • Identify and explore unforeseen under or overspending.
  • Design and administer key performance metrics.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Thorough understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Thorough understanding of Generally Accepted Auditing Standards.
  • Thorough understanding of methods of systems analysis and the principles, design, and procedural methods used in big data analysis.
  • Thorough understanding of project management.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong quantitative skills, expert problem-solving abilities, adeptness in logic, and analytical skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • Two years of professional experience as an accountant, auditor, or computer programmer analyst OR valid CPA (Certified Public Accountant) certificate with at least one year of professional experience as an accountant, auditor, or computer programmer analyst.
  • Experience with fund or non-profit accounting is a plus.
