About the position

Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh is seeking a Financial Analyst to join our team. This full-time position is integral to the financial operations of our organization, which encompasses four diverse museums: Carnegie Museum of Art, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Carnegie Science Center, and The Andy Warhol Museum. The Financial Analyst will be responsible for reviewing, recording, analyzing, and reporting complex financial transactions and budgetary results in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and the policies of The Carnegie. This role requires a strong analytical mindset, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate financial information effectively to senior management. The Financial Analyst will engage in various accounting functions, including the reconciliation of general ledger accounts, auditing journal entries, and assisting with the monthly close process. The position also involves preparing tax returns and payments, recording endowment activity, and maintaining fixed asset schedules. The successful candidate will perform internal audits, assist Accounts Payable with data entry, and prepare special reports to meet deadlines and government filing requirements. The Financial Analyst position is a union role, and the starting pay rate is $30.33 per hour. Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree in accounting and ideally have experience in fund accounting. The work environment is primarily sedentary, and the position requires obtaining specific clearances as part of the hiring process.

Responsibilities

  • Review and reconcile general ledger accounts and make necessary adjustments to assure their correctness.
  • Audit journal entries and accounts payable vouchers to determine their correctness and propriety of all transactions.
  • Assist with the monthly close process as directed by the Controller and/or Assistant Controller.
  • Prepare various monthly tax returns and payments on behalf of the organization related to parking, amusement, institution & service privilege (ISP), sales, and alternative fuel.
  • Record endowment activity and prepare various reports on endowment valuation and activity.
  • Record monthly depreciation on fixed asset accounts, maintain depreciation schedules and fixed asset subledgers; responsible for all matters relating to fixed asset reporting.
  • Perform internal audit functions and prepare internal audit reports.
  • Assist Accounts Payable with data entry and reconciling as necessary.
  • Assist Accounts Payable with the preparation and distribution of yearly 1099 forms as necessary.
  • Represent the Controller's Office during the performance of the Agreed Upon Procedures surrounding the museum collections by supervising the counts performed by the external auditors.
  • Assist with annual store physical inventory observations and general ledger adjustments.
  • Liaise with other departments in the organization to assist with their requests.
  • Prepare special reports as required to meet various deadlines and government filing requirements.
  • Cross-train in other areas of the financial services office to broaden skill-set and enhance the organizational knowledge of the department.
  • Assist the Assistant Controller and financial services department with all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with a major in accounting required.
  • One or more years' experience, preferably in fund accounting.
  • Strong analytical problem-solving skills and computer literacy.
  • Ability to gather and analyze costs and interpret and communicate this information to senior management.
  • Attention to detail is essential.
  • Demonstrated ability in financial analysis is important.
  • Knowledge and experience in working with a computerized accounting system required.
  • Knowledge of Non-Profit accounting preferred.
