About the position

Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) is responsible for developing AARP's annual budget, three periodic financial forecasts, and multi-year financial plan. The team partners closely with the Enterprise Strategy Group to ensure financial resources are available and aligned with the strategic priorities as approved by AARP leadership and the Board. FP&A also provides an array of financial analytical services to AARP business groups, leadership and the Board. The Financial Communications Director is responsible for creating informed and engaging communications for the Board of Directors, committee and management meetings, and staff briefings. These communications are aimed at enhancing financial transparency and supporting strong governance practices. The Director will translate complex financial and governance-related information into clear, concise, and compelling narratives that are easily understood by diverse audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Drafts, edits, and finalizes financial communications material for the Board of Directors, related Committees, and other stakeholders.
  • Works directly with Board members, Committee Chairs and members, and Executive management to coordinate governance activities, to include the preparation of board and committee materials, agendas, and meeting logistics.
  • Partners with executives from the different finance teams to translate complex financial information such as budgets, forecasts, and reports, into a clear and compelling narrative that is suitable for a diverse audience.
  • Prepares meeting minutes and summaries for Board of Directors and applicable Committees.
  • Acts as a liaison between senior leadership, board of directors, committee chairs and AARP Finance.
  • Provides leadership and guidance to the Financial Planning & Analysis team concerning Board of Directors and Committee related material.
  • Provides leadership support and backup for the Financial Planning and Analysis team.

Requirements

  • MBA in Finance, Business, English, Journalism, or a related field, with a minimum of 8+ years of professional experience in a writing-focused role at the executive level.
  • Exceptional executive-caliber writing skills with expert-level proficiency in Microsoft Word (top priority) and PowerPoint; confident navigating communications with executive leadership, board directors, and staff to meet high-stakes deadlines; thrives in high-visibility roles and possesses strong operational finance knowledge.
  • Skilled in technical finance writing, including the creation of detailed financial narratives for the annual budget, multi-year financial plans, and quarterly reports for the Audit & Finance Committee and full Board (approx. 60-70% of the role).

  • Prepares confidential and precise talking points for the CFO, COO, Committee Chair, and SVP of Financial Planning as needed.
  • Drafts meeting minutes and resolutions for Committee meetings; may serve as Recording Secretary when required.
  • Acts as the daily liaison between the parent finance organization and the Office of the Corporate Secretary on all Committee and Board matters, with working knowledge of the 'Diligent' board portal system.
  • Coordinates logistics for Audit & Finance Committee meetings with both staff and Board Directors.
  • Brings strong corporate governance experience.
