About the position

The Financial Controller at United Way California Capital Region will oversee the financial operations of the organization, ensuring compliance with GAAP and managing daily accounting activities. This role involves collaboration with the CFO to prepare financial reports, manage grant collections, and lead the accounting team, all while supporting the organization's mission to end poverty in the capital region.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise daily accounting activities, grant management functions, and payroll approval.
  • Ensure adherence to GAAP and all relevant financial regulations, including FASB standards.
  • Monitor cash flow to ensure the organization has the resources needed to meet its capital requirements and programmatic commitments.
  • Prepare and review monthly financial statements, cash flow analyses, and program-specific reports.
  • Conduct in-depth financial analysis to identify trends and opportunities for improvement, producing detailed analytical reports as needed.
  • Collaborate in crafting and adjusting the annual budget, working closely with program managers and the CFO to align resources with organizational goals.
  • Lead and inspire the accounting team, fostering a culture of collaboration and high performance.
  • Coordinate annual audits and tax preparations, ensuring accuracy and regulatory compliance.
  • Manage public and private grant reporting processes, working alongside program managers to track and modify budgets effectively.
  • Assess and recommend improvements to accounting policies and operational procedures to enhance efficiency and minimize costs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA certification or Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a manager position or higher position.
  • Strong accounting skills, with a comprehensive understanding of the accounting cycle, from day-to-day transactions to month-end and annual close-outs.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in managing or coaching teams, fostering a positive and goal-oriented work environment.
  • Proven experience in developing financials and presenting to boards or committees.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Excel and familiarity with accounting software, especially QuickBooks Enterprise.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to explain complex financial concepts clearly.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with not-for-profit accounting practices is preferred but not required.
