About the position

Under general supervision and direction, it's the responsibility of the Financial Counselor to make financial arrangements for patients with no insurance or poor insurance coverage. Collects required deposits from patients and their representatives when there is a financial responsibility due. Assists patients in obtaining financial assistance from federal, local and state agencies and charitable programs when a financial need is indicated. Ensures competency in ongoing training and education for the purposes of ensuring we stay acutely aware of changes. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all. Adheres to the Hospital Compliance Plan and to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state and federal agencies and accrediting bodies.

Responsibilities

• Make financial arrangements for patients with no insurance or poor insurance coverage.
• Collect required deposits from patients and their representatives.
• Assist patients in obtaining financial assistance from various agencies and programs.
• Ensure ongoing training and education to stay updated on changes.
• Participate in outstanding customer service and maintain respectful relationships.
• Adhere to the Hospital Compliance Plan and applicable regulations.
• Set up payment arrangements with uninsured patients and their representatives.
• Prepare and process cases for patients requesting assistance on their hospital accounts.
• Meet or exceed upfront collection standards assigned to the location.
• Work closely with Case Management staff for proper discharge planning.

Requirements

• Two years of experience in Patient Financial Services or related areas such as patient registration, finance, insurance collections, customer service, coding, medical, or contract management.
• High school diploma or GED.
