About the position

A well-established design-build development firm located in Century City/Los Angeles, specializing in unique, high-end modern architectural projects, has an immediate opening for a highly motivated Financial Manager / Controller. The purpose of this role is to help define strategic business actions and play a leading role in continuous improvement regarding financing, investments, and management. This includes responsibilities related to capital structure, risk management, auditing and reporting, business and tax planning, capital expenditures, research and development, working capital management, and budgeting. The Financial Manager / Controller will also be involved in investor relations, ensuring that the financial health of the organization is maintained and improved upon. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of real estate and be highly proficient in financial analysis, with a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of real estate development from acquisition through construction, project completions, and the disposal or sale of property. The role requires full knowledge of accounting principles and familiarity with construction accounting software, preferably Timberline. The Financial Manager / Controller will own all structures for accounting in relation to daily work, executive reporting, and tax planning, assisting project management with the financial structure of each project and consistently reviewing each project's bottom line to understand its financial standing. Essential functions of the role include developing performance metrics for development projects, reviewing all fractional investments, and determining strategies to move the organization forward. The Financial Manager / Controller will monitor investments, review and analyze financial statements, develop and maintain financial accounting systems, oversee cash flow, manage the acquisition of capital assets, and establish guidelines for budget and forecast preparation. This position requires making clear decisions that are timely and in the best interest of the company, as well as solving problems by assessing situations to identify causes and generating possible solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Help define strategic business actions and play a leading role in continuous improvement regarding financing, investments, and management.
  • Own all structures for accounting in relation to daily work, executive reporting, and tax planning.
  • Assist Project Management with the financial structure of each project.
  • Consistently review each project's bottom line and understand where each project stands financially.
  • Create performance metrics for development projects and maintain accounting books/binders.
  • Review all fractional investments and determine strategies to move the organization forward.
  • Monitor investments and assist with recommendations.
  • Review and analyze timely and accurate financial statements and reports in accordance with GAAP.
  • Develop and maintain financial accounting systems for cash management, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and credit control.
  • Oversee cash flow and prepare/manage cash flow forecasts in accordance with policy.
  • Manage the acquisition of capital assets and ensure proper recording of assets.
  • Establish guidelines for budget and forecast preparation and prepare the annual budget in consultation with the Owner.
  • Provide accurate and timely reporting on the financial activity of individual projects.
  • Monitor risk management policies and procedures to minimize organizational risks.
  • Make clear decisions that are timely and in the best interest of the company.
  • Assess problem situations to identify causes and generate possible solutions.

Requirements

  • Understand real estate and have a deep understanding of financial analysis related to real estate development.
  • Full knowledge of accounting principles and familiarity with construction accounting software (Timberline preferred).
  • Experience working with GL and insurances.
  • 10 years of experience in construction accounting (preferred).
  • 5 years of experience with SAGE 300 / Timberline (preferred).
