About the position

The Department of Genetics is looking for Financial Officer I to join a fast-moving department. The role will support the various financial needs of multiple Research Investigators as well administrative financial needs like reconciliations, reimbursements and effort/timekeeper. Responsible for providing fiscal and budgetary services to an assigned unit. Uses knowledge of the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures specific to accounting, financial analysis and budgetary processes. Manages assigned departmental accounts and provides ongoing financial analysis of departmental accounting functions. Assures proper accounting for state, grant, contract and/or revenue accounts as assigned. Provides analysis of gross expenditures and makes recommendations for maintaining fiscal stability. Assists in developing and administering budgets. May establish and maintain financial management databases and systems which conform to standard accounting practices. Monitors adherence to financial policy and procedure. Develops and provides financial statements and reports to upper management on regular or requested basis. May supervise departmental accounting operations and activities which could include approval and processing of disbursement and internal requisitions. Interacts with vendors and complies with UAB bid policy and procedures. May make decisions regarding the use of financial resources. Provides financial guidance to assigned staff and appropriate University personnel and coordinates integration with University accounting system. May prepare and/or supervise processing of departmental personnel action forms and as well as assume some payroll duties. Acts as liaison with appropriate University financial staff.

Responsibilities

  • Manage other support pages for faculty
  • Serve as backup proxy for faculty
  • Manage Kronos for biweekly employees
  • Manage effort for all grant paid employees
  • Assist with budget preparations
  • Assist with GL entries, cost transfer and rebudgeting requests
  • Process subcontract payments
  • Assist with RPPR submissions
  • Assist with salary reclasses
  • Assist with funding source changes
  • Assist with vendor contracts
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business or a related field
  • Two (2) years of related experience required
  • Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement
