About the position

The Financial Operations and Budget Specialist at William & Mary will play a crucial role in developing and managing budgets, overseeing financial operations, and administering human resources for research labs and initiatives within the Global Research Institute. This position is responsible for monitoring, analyzing, and reporting on budgets, ensuring compliance with fiscal administration practices, and reconciling various funding sources. The role requires a strong understanding of budgeting processes and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage budgets for research labs and initiatives.
  • Monitor, analyze, and report on budgets, addressing unexpected budget issues.
  • Reconcile grant funds, local & private funds, and E&G funds, including preparing monthly reconciliations.
  • Utilize and manage budgeting processes, revenue sources, and expenditures effectively.
  • Work independently to resolve issues and exercise sound judgment in decision-making.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in business, accounting, or finance or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working with fiscal administration and developing and managing budgets.
  • Intermediate to advanced level proficiency with Excel.
  • Working knowledge of fiscal administration and generally accepted accounting practices and procedures.
  • Experience with financial data analysis and reporting using tools such as Microsoft Excel and Power BI.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities concurrently.
  • Proven ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience managing grants and familiarity with grants and contracts in a university setting.
  • Experience in higher education, research environment, and/or non-profit fundraising.
  • Experience with Banner Finance, Qlik, Chrome River, BuyW&M.
  • Familiarity with Virginia state policies and procedures.
  • Several years of progressively responsible financial and budget management experience.
  • Supervisory experience.
