About the position

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the American Bar Association (ABA) will oversee all financial activities, ensuring fiscal compliance and strategic financial planning. This role involves directing financial reporting, budgeting, and long-term financial planning while fostering a high-performing financial services team. The CFO will serve as a strategic partner to the Executive Director and senior management, enhancing the efficiency of fiscal controls and developing revenue growth strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a strategic partner to the Executive Director & COO and senior management in financial strategy and operations.
  • Create and oversee fiscal controls to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Develop growth plans to increase revenue in collaboration with members and leadership.
  • Lead all financial and accounting functions including budgeting, reporting, auditing, and cash management.
  • Provide financial updates and recommendations to various committees and boards.
  • Manage investments and reserves in collaboration with the Investment Committee.
  • Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory financial functions.
  • Analyze financial operations for restructuring opportunities.
  • Oversee the charitable development department.
  • Build and lead a diverse financial services team, fostering collaboration and inclusivity.
  • Interact with external parties for audits and insurance procurement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • At least ten years of experience in finance, accounting, and financial planning.
  • At least five years of experience negotiating with banks and financial institutions.
  • Certified finance professional (CPA or CIA) or a Master's Degree in Business Administration.
  • Experience developing strategies that grow revenue through sales of products and services.
  • Ability to interpret complex analytics to refine strategies and measure results.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills in a remote or hybrid environment.
  • Proficient in database and accounting software systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous finance experience in a not-for-profit organization or membership association.
  • Experience with financial reporting in a tax-exempt environment.
