About the position

The Fire and EMS Lieutenant is responsible for performing direct patient care including assessment, evaluation, and basic and advanced life support according to New Mexico state standards. The position involves operational decision-making in the absence of the EMS Chief and/or Deputy Chief, as well as instructing Firefighter/EMTs on in-services, education, and driving. The Lieutenant also performs clerical and maintenance duties as required.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to emergency medical calls and operates ambulance under emergency conditions.
  • Evaluates patient's condition and administers aid as per protocol.
  • Operates resuscitation and suction devices during cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on assigned ambulance and ensures it is properly stocked.
  • Responds to emergency alarms and performs fire suppression and rescue duties.
  • Engages in firefighting efforts and rescue operations.
  • Inspects and maintains department facilities, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Supervises, monitors, and coordinates daily shift work assignments.
  • Provides guidance and direction to subordinate employees.
  • Conducts periodic training and promotes teamwork and collaboration.
  • Utilizes computer and custom software for data entry related to purchase orders and accounts payable.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma (or GED or High School Equivalence).
  • Three (3) years paid professional employment directly related to emergency medical services as an active and current New Mexico State EMT-Intermediate.
  • One (1) year in a supervisory capacity.
  • Ability to read and write English to understand and interpret written procedures and technical manuals.

Nice-to-haves

  • Three (3) years paid professional employment directly related to emergency medical services as an EMT-Paramedic.
  • Communication, leadership, organizational and coaching experience and skills.
  • Bi-lingual (English/Spanish).
